FACET brings Mid-Century Modern into the present.

At the end of 2023, architecture studio FACET settled in Kasterlee. With a shared history and inspirations such as Eames, Breuer, and Mies Van der Rohe, it was only natural that the furniture for their new office came from Master Interior. Follow us for a tour of some iconic design pieces.

Timeless design with a personal story.

FACET stands for architecture designed for living. “For our designs, we focus on ‘designed to last,’” explains managing director and (interior) architect Eline Debruyne. “That’s why our sources of inspiration are not the latest trends, but rather ‘old-time favorite’ classics.”

The connection between Master Interior and FACET dates back to before the studio was founded. “I got to know the design landscape at Master while working there as a student during my architecture studies. Our office features artworks by my brother Pieter, who also created a cover for your magazine. And of course, Master Interior is simply a well-established name.”

Contemporary Mid-Century Modern

For the design of their new studio, FACET looked to the past. “We refer to ‘Mid-Century Modern,’” says Eline. “This style is characterized by simple lines, an honest use of materials, and minimal decorative ornamentation. It has often been the inspiration for our designs. In our environment, we primarily associate it with the Turnhout School from the 1960s, where the showroom of Master Interior is a prime example. We incorporate this style in our own way, transforming it into a contemporary whole.”

For the loose furniture, FACET drew from design classics by well-known designers from the past, the masters of contemporary design. For example, the office chairs are Vitra Aluminium Chairs, an iconic design by Charles and Ray Eames. “That choice was a given. The chrome finish and dark brown leather perfectly complement the interior.”

In the meeting room, five chairs designed by the Eameses and now produced by Vitra were also included. “The Dining Chair Metal in all black complements the meeting table we designed in natural stone, travertine. The Louis Poulsen lighting above completes the whole look.”

Finally, in the reception area, the choice was made for a combination of different versions of the Knoll Bertoia Diamond Chair. Harry Bertoia’s most famous piece of furniture was named after its diamond shape. The side table by Saarinen also comes from the Knoll collection.
