Myth #1: You design an interior from a blank slate.
That’s possible, of course, but more often than not, there is already a starting point. “These clients visited our showroom in their search for furniture for their seaside apartment,” says Master interior designer Sofie. “They had a floor plan of the space. So, they were well-prepared.”
Moreover, they had already thought about some furniture pieces. “They liked the oval dining table from the Saarinen collection by Knoll, finished in white laminate. And they already had the Wishbone Chairs by Carl Hansen & Søn, in soaped oak with natural paper cord.”
Myth #2: Light-colored furniture requires a lot of maintenance.
In their search for a sofa, the clients and Sofie came across the HAY Mags Soft Seater Combination in the showroom. “There were other alternatives, but this one stood out in terms of price-quality ratio.” The only downside is that it is finished in Hallingdal white, the iconic but very light first fabric from Kvadrat. “Luckily, wool is very low-maintenance; it’s almost self-cleaning. So, you don’t need to worry at all about maintenance.”
Myth #3: A sofa must face the television.
“In an apartment, you obviously have limited space,” Sofie continues. “The clients were wondering how the furniture would relate to the space. Thanks to the 3D design I made for them, they got a much better idea. They were pleasantly surprised that we thought along with them about their layout.” Additionally, thanks to the 3D design, an important decision was made. “There was some concern that the sofa would block the passage if it was positioned crosswise. Now, they’re very happy with such a beautiful view of the sea instead of their TV cabinet.”
Myth #4: In a rectangular room, a rectangular rug belongs.
Connected shapes give rise to some deep-rooted interior myths. “In this living room, the oval Fly rug from BIC fits perfectly with the lines of the table and the sofa. The black diamonds immediately catch the eye. This is definitely welcome among the otherwise mostly solid colors in this interior. Additionally, this high-pile rug adds extra warmth. It creeps between your toes, and the fabric ripples as you walk on it. Perfect for a seaside apartment.”
Myth #5: A reading nook is a reading nook, a separate corner where you go to read.
The reading nook was perfectly integrated into the rest of the space. “The Vitra Eames Lounge Chair with the matching ottoman is a classic that the clients had been fans of for a long time. The walnut shell and the natural caramel leather fit beautifully within the living room’s color palette. The same goes for the delicate legs and wooden finish of the Ligne Roset Alburni coffee table.”
