Heritage and contemporary
A great admirer of the Turnhout School, the modernist movement that the Master Interior showroom is such a fine example of, Filip Versmissen fell for this building on a busy road between Turnhout and Antwerp at first sight. “The architecture of this house is its greatest strength; it gives you an enormous sense of space,” says Filip. “A large part of the home has been restored to its original state, but adapted to the demands of modern living.” Filip works as an interior architect at Master Interior, and drew happily on both his working environment and his own passion for interiors when furnishing his home.
Before and after
A blissful conversation pit
The most important room in the house is without doubt the generous living room. On the street side sits a conversation pit, where a Ligne Roset Togo sofa fits perfectly on a woven, hand-tufted rug by Nanimarquina. The living room floor runs seamlessly across the top of the run of cabinets beneath the fireplace and the television. A B&B Italia uP ottoman from 1969, designed by Gaetano Pesce as both a child’s seat and a sculpture, sits in the shadow of an enormous work by the Chilean painter Victor RamÃrez.
Music maestro
In the middle of the living room you can sink into a Cassina LC2 sofa, designed by Le Corbusier, and enjoy a little music. The record player found its place on the stylish Zanotta Quaderna console. Speakers from various sound systems are subtly built into both the black wall unit beside the conversation pit and the sideboard next to the dining table.
Corian in the kitchen
The rear section of the living room, looking out over the beautiful garden, flows seamlessly into the open kitchen. There, two Louis Poulsen PH5 Classic lamps immediately catch the eye. For the worktop, Filip chose durable Corian, with a strip of solid oak running beneath it.
Masterfully bespoke
For the other rooms too, Filip could count on the expertise of the Master Interior team. In the utility room, cabinets by the Italian brand Porro were fitted around the built-in washing machine and tumble dryer. “Their interiors in mongoy veneer came closest to those of the original cabinets,” says Filip. In the bathroom, a bespoke cabinet with a mirrored wall was made. The shower was given a smoked glass panel and a Corian wall, and the Corian floor was made in the Master Interior workshop as well.
Design classics
When it came to furniture, Filip chose tasteful classics, preferably from the period in which the house was built. The eyecatcher in the hall is the Willow Chair, designed in 1904 by Charles Rennie Mackintosh and back in production since 1973 thanks to the Italian brand Cassina. The desk chair in the children’s bedroom is a Vitra Panton Chair, the first chair to be moulded from a single piece of plastic.
